Scientific Data Analyst - Obstetrics, provide high level expertise in applicable public health disciplines to collect, abstract, code, analyze, or interpret scientific data contained within information systems and databases related to public health.

Responsibilities:
  • Review death certificates and other data from state health departments
  • Research current literature on medical conditions and relationship to pregnancy
  • Determine cause of maternal death, associated medical conditions, and causal and temporal relationships between pregnancy and death
  • Assign and enter appropriate PMSS code into PMSS data entry software
  • Review all PMSS cases at year end with OB/GYN for verification and consistency of coding/classification and develop new algorithms as needed
  • Collaborate with other researchers on epidemiologic analyses and publications
  • Assist staff to insure data from states includes required items and are received in a timely manner
  • Verify the completeness and accuracy of all data sent from state health departments and notifies project staff of problems identified with state data in a timely manner

Basic Qualifications:
  • In-depth experience and knowledge in clinical obstetrics, maternal morbidity and mortality, medical conditions on vital records, data quality control measures
  • Strong skills in precision and judgment, searching scientific and medical literature, working independently with little guidance, and scientific and data accuracy
  • Ability to assess and synthesize data from multiple sources, including death certificates, birth certificates, coroner and medical examiner reports, Lexus-Nexus searches, and health care providers
  • Ability to determine cause of death and associated medical conditions, and causal and temporal relationships between pregnancy and death
  • Strong communication skills
